Changes at Wofford mean changes at the Old Gold and Black as well
“Normal? Is that even still a word?”
I find myself asking that question a lot nowadays, as I am sure you do as well. 2020 seems to be a year full of twists and turns. Actually, not just twists and turns. It’s more like being on a really old roller coaster that definitely isn’t up to code. It jostles you way too much, and just makes you fear for your life rather than give you a sensation of safely flying through the air.
2020 has redefined the word “normal” for all of us. After being sent home in March, the Wofford community had to navigate the jarring experience of using only Zoom and Moodle, all while dealing with the emotional toll of a global pandemic and political unrest. I am not sure that anything has been “normal” since Interim.
This has undoubtedly changed the atmosphere here at Wofford. And readers, I am here to inform you about some changes at the Old Gold and Black as well.
As the new editor-in-chief of the Old Gold and Black, I want to introduce myself to you. Now a senior, I started writing for the Old Gold and Black as a sophomore contributing writer. Reporting on the many controversies on Wofford’s campus fueled me; as I became a more experienced writer, I decided to take the next step and apply for the open position of managing editor. Spoiler alert: I got it.
I spent my junior year piecing together more campus happenings while learning the ropes of leading a newspaper. Oxford commas? No more. Fact checking? Of course. Meeting deadlines? Well… most of the time. Working with the previous editorial team—Meghan Daniel ’19, editor-in-chief, and Mikala McBride ’19, copy editor—gave me plenty of talent to learn from.
As the new editor-in-chief, accompanied by a new editorial team and a larger staff, I want to let you, our readers, know what to expect this year. This year has been filled with too much unknown; at the very least, you deserve an update from the newspaper.
We will keep printing. This year, we have a much larger staff ready to get the information you need down on paper. We’re also making some changes to our look—you’ll notice on the first page that our beloved cigar-wielding terrier got a makeover as well. Don’t forget to check out our website (woffordogb.com) for the new look as well.
We will hold onto “normal” as much as possible, but that won’t stop the “new” in “newspaper” this year. We might have to trade pages for screens, depending on how the semester goes. We have a new editorial team with great potential and great ideas ready to take on the uncertainty that is 2020.
Classmates of mine, welcome back to Wofford.
