Students share their go-to music as a new semester begins
Despite the insanity that the year 2020 brought the world, some things were able to remain delightfully the same. Among those things is the annual release of everyone’s Spotify Wrapped statistics!
This feature of the music and radio platform allows a breakdown of one’s preferences, ranging from if they’re in the top .001% of someone’s listeners (ahem, that would be many of you for Ms. Taylor Swift) to if they were able to explore other genres and discover new artists.
As these tidbits of information get spread across many social media platforms, trends become apparent. During this past March, perhaps the world’s collective musical taste got a little gloomier and more pandemic-related. Jamming out to the same song from middle school over and over again while you’re back and stuck in your childhood bedroom comes to mind…
All of this is to say that the music we choose when life events come about, big or small, become deeply personal as they get intertwined with the memories we make. Perhaps when driving back home you find yourself listening to your dad’s old favorite songs you swore you found annoying, or maybe you found time over the summer to explore Latin music and are now considering pursuing a Spanish class or two.
When polling students, some broader trends came about, such as heading to the beach was a “country playlist only” car ride. Others mentioned that heading back to Wofford after a long break makes them compelled to listen to music their friends have suggested to them, or maybe even a little row-inspired jam session!
For those people who are far more mature than the rest of us, podcasts about murder mysteries or politics are also options.
Whatever you choose to listen to going into this new year, the OGB staff wants you to know that we are tuned in and eager to hear what you have to say as your on campus news source!
