Why Old Gold & Black?

I jokingly published an article in the Old Black and Blue, our satire issue, about how we have such a low retention rate when it comes to staff members. Unfortunately, we have found this joke to have some level of truth over the past semester.

A lot of our wonderful staff writers have resigned due to other commitments or an overwhelming workload. This is completely understandable, but, especially from an outsider’s perspective, it may seem as though the OG&B is not an ideal work environment.

However, many OG&B staff members see that as being quite the opposite. The paper provides a homey environment to everyone who chooses to be a member of our team.

We value the opinions of each staff member and contributing writer and are always looking for more voices to highlight.

We also view ourselves as making quite a difference on campus, as curating a reliable news source for any community, especially the Wofford community, is vital to maintaining public knowledge, safety, etc.

“The Old Gold & Black is special because it highlights the important things happening on campus from a student’s perspective,” said Fadzai Mushayamunda ‘22, staff writer. “Because of this, the newspaper gives the campus and the community an inside look into what life is like to be a Wofford student.”

Of course, this “life as a Wofford student” can come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging from the most positive of experiences to the worst. In either case, it is our job here at OG&B to give the honest truth of what that life consists of for a variety of people.

Newly hired staff members even shared their enjoyment with the job so far, with John Clark ‘24, staff writer explaining that he applied because of his interest in current events and journalism, and found immediate gratification among joining the team.

Even those who are not a part of the writing community have found a home in our student-run publication.

“Working as photographer and social media coordinator allows me to contribute to this paper in a way that benefits me most because I am able to utilize my strongest skill sets and expertise,” Anna Lee Hoffman ’23 said.

There is always an opportunity for our readers to bring their skill sets to the table and contribute to the newspaper in any way that we can offer. All members of the Wofford community can have an article published in the OG&B, regardless of whether or not they are a member of our staff.

The Old Gold & Black has a fast-paced work environment that is set out to maintain accuracy and relevance with every piece that we publish.

We are looking for people to contribute to our team in areas such as writing, illustrating, marketing and more. We always need fresh opinions and teammates. Come see us in the Publication Room in Dupre Residence Hall every Tuesday at noon or you can email the editors at [email protected]
