As Wofford’s education department continues to grow with new faculty members and students, the field has taken a step forward with a new education club. This organization is aimed to create a space where students can learn about opportunities, the importance of education in society and connect with other students in the education field.
The first meeting took place on Oct. 21 where Christie Johnson, senior instructor of education, and Kristy Hammett, assistant professor of education, welcomed students to learn about the opportunities that the education club has to offer.
In a society, where education is imperative for success, this club inspires students who are not in the education department to think about how these skills can be transferable across career fields.
“It is critically important to understand and support education, especially in our community,” Johnson said.
The education department is designed for students who may be interested in a career in the teaching field. This club offers a different perspective on society and community as a whole. Educational skills can be applied in fields of psychology, social work and speech therapy.
When asked about the goals of this club, Johnson shared that this club is here to support students and future educators.
“This club will provide a place for our students to fellowship and have opportunities for professional development outside of the classroom,” Johnson said.
Some of the activities that this club has to offer is a service project with a local Spartanburg school in December. The club meetings will also include visits from last year’s graduates who are now at Converse University in the Master of Arts in Teaching program.
They will be speaking about their journey in the teaching field and sharing resources for others who wish to follow the same path. These opportunities for upcoming educators to pursue the Master’s program are made possible through initiatives created by school Districts 3 and 7, One Spartanburg, Converse and Wofford.
The education department is fairly new; as in it was obtained two years ago. There are more than 50 students who have declared the education minor, becoming one of the fastest growing departments on campus.
To complete the minor at Wofford, students are required to take six courses and complete an interim, where they will have an opportunity to go into classrooms and learn from the teachers. These courses allow students to experience what it’s like to teach, lead and mentor local students.
As the club continues to grow, the members of the education club hope to reach all students. Education is important in all fields; Students at Wofford are here to gain an education in our chosen areas to further our careers.
While emphasizing the importance of education, Johnson and Hammett welcome all students to their department and they hope that through this club, students will want to take Education 200 and realize that they were to teach.
The education club is open to students from all majors who are interested in the field of education. Contact Christie Johnson at [email protected], if you have questions or would like more information about the department and club.
