My fellow Terriers, I am overjoyed to now serve as the Editor in Chief of Wofford’s Old Gold & Black. While this isn’t the path that the staff saw our paper taking, I am extremely proud and grateful for everyone standing behind me and supporting me down this road.
In an effort to get to know me, I want to tell you all a little about myself. My name is Madison Tolomea and I am a junior from Charleston, SC. I am an English and Humanities double major with a Sociology & Anthropology minor. I worked as the copy editor for my high school paper, The Tribal Tribune, and am thrilled to continue my editorship at Wofford.
My experience with OG&B began last year when I applied to work as a staff writer. In this position, I did what I am most comfortable doing: pitching stories, conducting interviews and writing the article. I am grateful for this experience and being able to dip my toe in the waters of OG&B.
From there, I knew I wanted to take on a higher role within this organization. I applied for the role of Managing Editor and began that job at the beginning of my junior year. While I only served that role for a semester, I am incredibly grateful for Brandi Wylie ‘23 for believing in me and my capabilities. I am so lucky for the team of writers that worked under me and always came to the table with fresh ideas and excited to improve their skills.
While I was Managing Editor, I was lucky enough to watch our new hires, Ava Cox ‘27, Abby Taylor ‘27 and SK Saggu ‘26 find their place on staff and seeing them become confident in their talent was an honor. I saw our returning writer Madison Bush ‘27 find her niche with political articles, always effortlessly putting into words how sensitive the government can be.
I watched Emory Robinson ‘27 flourish as Assistant Editor and while we worked together in high school, she has truly come into her own and left a lasting impact on OG&B already.
I saw Addie Porter ‘26, Hailey Hirter ‘26 and Tatum Mogck ‘25 absolutely kill the game with photography and design, skills that the entire staff is grateful for.
We all waited for our friends from abroad to return and I am excited for Caroline Parker ‘26, Catherine Lesesne ‘26, Nola Webb ‘26 and Nick Ross ‘26 to bring their excellence back to Spartanburg and our publications room.
And finally, I watched as Katie Kirk ‘25 tirelessly fought for our paper. While trying to balance the paper, she served as the president of Kappa Alpha Theta among many other positions– the girl is dedicated, what can I say. I want to thank you, Katie, for trusting me with the paper and I hope to lead as well as you did.
I hope that with my role as Editor in Chief, I can take skills from each person on staff and make the newspaper something that everyone on Wofford’s campus picks up and reads. A priority of mine is making sure that every voice feels heard and that no organization feels misrepresented. I am thrilled to take on this challenge, thank you!
