Sitting in Leonard Auditorium, surrounded by the soft glow of candles and the tear-stained faces of my fellow classmates, I am moved. I am moved by how we have come together not only as a college, but as a community.
Although I did not have the privilege of knowing West Summers, listening to the wonderful words of his friends, Dr. Samhat and Chaplain Ron Robinson gave me insight into who he was.
He was a kind, funny and intelligent young man whose sudden passing was a shock to everyone in the Wofford family.
Robinson’s first words to the student body, “No one wants to be here,” are devastatingly honest. It is with his advice to “comfort one another” that we begin the process of grieving.
As much as we would like blame ourselves for this tragedy, it is important to remember the wise words of those who were dear to him and know that he rests easy and in peace.
I am beyond proud to a member of a community that comes together during a time of sadness and supports one another wholeheartedly. We are strong together and will always protect and love one another as we mourn of the loss of a great friend, student and brother.
While it is heartbreaking during this time, and it appears that the rest of our days will only be shrouded in darkness, we must know that the light can come forth again.
