A Hidden Jewel on Wofford’s Campus
By: Christian Goerner ’18, Contributing Writer
Tucked away in the corner of Campus near the Baseball Field is the hidden jewel of Wofford’s Student Affairs Department, the Wellness Center. The Wellness Center is a one-stop shop for anything a student might need from sick visits to lab tests, STD screens and referrals, counseling services and so much more. You can make an appointment to see any member of the Wellness Center team through myWofford with just a few clicks, or often they accept walk-ins as well. However, beyond the numerous services they offer, what makes the Wellness Center truly exceptional is the professional and outgoing staff. Dean Beth Wallace, Perry Henson, Kelly Buckner, Lisa Lefevre, Dr. Tammy Gillia, and Nurse Anna Seegars are amazing. These ladies go out of their way to cater to every student. Dr. Gilliam and Nurse Seegars ensure that every student they see feels like they are home. Personally, they remind me of my mother caring for me when I’m sick. Just talking to them seems to make me feel better. Dean Wallace and her counseling staff are the same way. You can go to see them for something as simple as having time management issues or as serious as severe mental disorders or anything in between. I promise you that they have heard it all before, so if you need them— use them! It is almost entirely confidential— there are three reasons why they wouldn’t be, but the counselors will outline this to you before beginning the initial session. No one will ever know that you are seeing them unless you give them permission to disclose. They also go above and beyond their duties. For example, one weekend, an incident occurred on campus and Mrs. Henson came to answer questions and to be with students for several hours on her day off. Mrs. Henson is not required to do this, but instead she still came to campus because she truly cares for the students at this school. Mrs. Henson also did many things behind the scenes to ensure that all parties involved were taken care of to the best of her ability. Her willingness ate away at much of her well deserved off time and well into her weekend evening. Dean Wallace and Kelly Buckner are the same way. They are often only an email away and will drop everything if you truly need to see them. Giving tours of Wofford, I always point out the Wellness Center as a prime example of how Wofford is truly a family. The staff is friendly and caring. They are there for whatever you need- mentally, physically or emotionally.
