The equestrian team competed at Lander University on Feb. 18 and qualified two riders for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 5 Region 3 regional competition—the first time more than one Wofford rider has qualified individually in the team’s three-year history. Last season, junior Grace Edwards qualified in two different events for the Terriers and was also the first Wofford rider to qualify for the zone competition.
Senior Sarah Madden qualified in the advanced walk trot canter division with her second place finish at Lander, while sophomore Mary Bradley Cassada’s second place ride in the novice flat division earned her enough points to qualify.
Seniors Madden and Abby Umberger are founding members of the team, and Umberger’s final competition with the Terriers occurred at the Lander-hosted show.
“At Lander we had a total of 14 riders compete, which is one of the largest groups we’ve had since the team started,” says sophomore and co-captain Allison Andrews. “It’s great to see the team growing and improving. We were able to maximize the amount of points we could earn! It was a great way to be able to celebrate Abby’s final show.”
