Wofford, Converse, Safe Homes and Ciclops Sponsor Open Mic Night for Those Affected by Domestic Violence
At 8 p.m. on October 18, Ciclops Cyderi and Brewery will host an Open Mic Night for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, sponsored by the Wofford College Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Converse College’s Office of Community and Inclusion and Safe Homes Rape Crisis Coalition. This is the 3rdannual Open Mic Night for Domestic Violence in Spartanburg, SC.
The Open Mic Night was originally established by Jamie Hughes from Safe Homes and Kimberly Seibles from Converse College. In previous years, this event has been held on Converse College’s campus. This year, however, the event will relocate to the Ciclops Cyderi and Brewery in order to accommodate larger numbers.
“This event was originally created so that people who have been affected by personal violence, whether they’re a victim, family member or friend, can share their story with others,” said Jamie Hughes.
This event is planned during Domestic Violence Awareness Month each year, and each year, becomes more pressing for the public to attend. The most recent national numbers regarding domestic violence were released during late September of 2018. The statistics placed South Carolina at number six in the ranks of domestic violence cases in the United States. In the 21 years the numbers have been compiled, South Carolina has consistently been in the top ten states for domestic violence issues.
“For me, it is vitally important, regardless of the outlet, to start and continue conversations about the reality of personal violence and to raise awareness of the prevalence of it in South Carolina especially,” said Hughes.
Although domestic violence is typically associated with spouses or familial relationships, dating violence is a type of personal violence that is a large issue across college campuses and can eventually lead to further relationships with domestic violence. Hughes stated that many unhealthy relationship patterns and behaviors have been normalized in today’s culture.
The Open Mic Night for Domestic Violence Awareness Month is not a class or a lecture; it is real people telling their stories through songs, poetry or whichever medium they feel most comfortable. It is a safe space for people to share and learn from one another. So, try to come listen to the brave women and men who choose to speak and share their story. Be sure to bring an open mind and an open heart.
