CONNECTING YOU TO SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER—
After the hustle and bustle of midterm week and ‘getting your life together’ after fall break, next thing you know it is November and the holiday season is upon us. Yes indeed—this semester is flying by!
With the spirit of giving thanks and spreading merrily cheer with the holidays only a few weeks away, what better way to do so than to give back to a community in need. For the month of November, here is a list of service opportunities to further enhance that holiday spirit:
Southside Unity in the Community:
Southside Unity in the Community is dedicated to encouraging volunteerism within the Southside community here in Spartanburg. This program intends to make available in one central location several things: resources, training and also opportunities that will inspire and engage volunteerism for all citizens. SSUIC is looking for volunteers in an array of areas including:
- Accounting
- Art/Design
- Grant Writing
- Food Preparation
- Event Planning
- Communications
- Public Relations/Media
…and more!
For more information on how to volunteer, visit their website at: ssuitc.org/volunteer.php or contact Southside Unity in the Community by phone: 864-435-3005.
Urban League of the Upstate:
The Urban League of the Upstate—conveniently located off of East Main Street near the Wells Fargo building and Converse—focuses on issues surrounding education, health, housing and employment.
With volunteer efforts here in Spartanburg focusing on each issue area, the greatest need for volunteers is in the area of education. Wanting to work with elementary-aged children? There’s a program for that. Want to mentor middle to high school aged children? There’s a program for that. Looking to help students successfully master the college application process? Yes, there’s a program for that, too.
For more information on how you can get involved, visit their volunteer section of the website: http://urbanleagueupstate.org/get-involved/volunteer/ or contact myself, as I along with several Wofford students actively volunteer with the Urban League of the Upstate: [email protected].
Access Health of Spartanburg:
Access Health of Spartanburg, located right in our backyard behind the Village, is striving to enhance access to healthcare for those uninsured of Spartanburg County through sustainable health system change that will result in improved health outcomes and 100% access to effective, efficient, safe, timely, patient-centered and equitable healthcare. If you’re interested in going into the medical field or are testing the waters with the Pre-Med track, than seeking an internship or a volunteer opportunity with Access Health would be a great option for you!
For more information, visit their volunteer section of their website at: accesshealthspartanburg.org/interns_access_health_spartanburg, contact them by phone at: 864-560-0190, or simply walk out the back gate towards the hospital and follow the signs that lead to Access Health.
Of course, if there is something that you are interested in that wasn’t featured, visit the Spartanburg.com website (spartanburg.com/wpbdm-category/volunteer-ops/) to check out more volunteer opportunities.
If you have any questions or are looking for internships designed for a particular major, stop by the Center for Global and Community Engagement as they have plenty of resources that will guide you to a successful internship.
