Each year brings the excitement of a fresh school year, fresh faces and a fresh start, but this year in particular has a feel of excited anticipation. You can almost sense it in the air. Part of it is the construction– both the dust and the expectancy of these coming buildings which will greatly improve athletics, academics, fine arts and social life for students at Wofford.
But also I think it has something to do with being senior year, living in the Village surrounded by my best friends from the last three years and knowing our time being all together draws swiftly to a close.
Last week at opening convocation, James Scott (’97) told the story of something Rev. Talmage Skinner (’56) had once said to him during his time at Wofford: “You don’t go to Wofford; you join it.” I had heard that sort of thing before, but last Thursday was probably the first time I could really feel the truth of the statement.
Besides getting prematurely nostalgic and sappy in the school newspaper, I also serve as the president of Campus Union, Wofford’s student government. Campus Union is an assembly of delegates, elected by the student body, to represent and act on the students’ behalf. Our focus this year is to address things and processes at Wofford, large or small, that students wish to see added, improved or reformed. We work to accomplish this by voicing these concerns to the administration and the Board of Trustees and by making strides towards improvements through whatever funding, marketing or labor we can contribute ourselves.
Campus Union is organized into six committees which serve as the basic operating units through which these goals and objectives are accomplished. These committees are comprised of elected Campus Union delegates and students from the general student population. Currently over 180 students are involved with Campus Union and its committees.
The high level of student involvement, not just in Campus Union, but in the Wofford community in general, is one of the things that makes Wofford so special. Campus Union has been a large part of my time at Wofford, but it is by no means the extent of my involvement, nor does it exclusively define my time at Wofford. Find things to be involved in and be a part of, and they will enrich your time here tremendously. But more than any group you join or activity you do, the people — classmates, faculty, and staff — will define your time at Wofford. That is what joining Wofford truly means.
