What Sparkle City has to offer Wofford students

Wofford lies in the heart of downtown Spartanburg; however, many students may not know all that this city has to offer. From locally owned restaurants to beautiful parks, Spartanburg has much more to offer than only the campus that Wofford students call home.

For those looking to get outside, about fifteen minutes away from campus is Glendale Shoals Preserve, which serves as a home to Wofford’s own Goodall Environmental Studies Center. The building is part of an old mill that has been renovated to serve as a classroom and lab space for the college’s environmental studies department.

The preserve is located on Lawson’s Fork Creek, a great destination for lovers of the outdoors. It is open from dawn to dusk. People from all over come to explore the beauties of Glendale Shoals. It is most popular among hikers, photographers and explorers.

More casually, it’s a great place for students to get some fresh air and relaxation.

If you are interested in exercise, Cyclebar is only a few minutes from Wofford. The indoor cycling studio sits on the corner of N Church Street and W St John Street. Wofford student Julia-Reagan Clark ‘22, is one of the instructors at Cyclebar.

“This summer, I worked on getting my certification to become a Cyclebar instructor.” Reagan continued. “Your first ride is always free, and the workout is totally worth it!”

Clark also said that she has met many great people and came across amazing opportunities from being a regular at Cyclebar. The times for Cyclebar vary but can be found on their website.

Those interested in supporting local farmers and businesses can visit the Hub City Farmers Market, open Saturdays from 8AM to 12PM. It serves as a great way for Wofford students to get involved in a non-profit organization in Spartanburg.

In addition to supplying fresh produce throughout the community, the Hub City Farmers Market also advocates for positive food policies and sustainability in agriculture. Wofford student, Jill Hethcox ‘24 volunteered at the Hub City Farmers Market for the first time this past weekend.

“Having access to fresh produce and products is not always easy to come by and the market offers an even better source through local vendors,” Hethcox said.

She explained that everybody who participates in the market seems very grateful to be there.

For the foodies, Spartanburg is also home to some great restaurants, some of which even take payment in Terrier Bucks. Among one of the most popular restaurants for Wofford students is Cribbs Kitchen. Located on Main Street, Cribbs Kitchen serves everything from burgers and sandwiches, to wraps and salads.

Other restaurants that accept payment in Terrier Bucks include: Papa John’s Pizza, RJ Rockers, Lime Leaf and Monarch Café. However, a survey sent out to students on August 24 asked which local restaurants they would like to see accept Terrier Bucks, suggesting a change of Terrier Bucks options to come.

There are so many opportunities for Wofford students to get off campus and explore all of what Spartanburg has to offer. From photographers, to lovers of the outdoors, to foodies, Spartanburg seems to have something for everyone.
