Ever craving some good ol’ fashioned barbeque and don’t know where to get some? Or, too lazy to leave the courtesy of your residence hall or apartment? Have no fear! Pappy’s Old Fashioned Barbeque is here – well, down the street, but you get the picture. For our second stop on our WoffordSpoon journey, we successfully ventured to Pappy’s Old Fashioned Barbeque, bringing you a glimpse inside one of the many hidden gems of Spartanburg.
Located off of Chesnee Highway in Spartanburg, Pappy’s is working to become a staple in the Spartanburg community one plate at a time. Opening four and a half years ago in 2012, Pappy’s smokes all of their meat in-house with real firewood, leading to a tender, flavorful dish.
Right now, Pappy’s isn’t on most Wofford students’ radars (except for Wofford’s chapter of Ducks Unlimited, who must recognize gold when they see it, since they have Pappy’s cater their fundraiser every year). The restaurant has free WiFi and outlets at every booth, perfect for the barbeque-loving college student who thinks Starbucks is too mainstream of a study spot. For those people who value convenience, Pappy’s even has online ordering and delivery (for an extra, well-spent $2.00).
Seniors Jonathan Franklin and Zack Morrow had the chance to talk with the owner, Lee Downey, as they waited on (and devoured) their food. Downey is something of a barbecue prodigy – years ago, he placed second in his first-ever professional barbecue contest against 51 competitors, missing the blue ribbon by a tenth of a point. He’s retired from the life of the professional circuit and focuses solely on Pappy’s now.
And boy, are we glad he did! Franklin ordered chicken strips with a side of fries and hush puppies, while Morrow ordered a BBQ plate with hush puppies and baked beans.
“That was easily some of the best pulled pork I’ve ever tasted,” Morrow told Downey immediately after finishing his plate.
“The food was so good, I feel like I’ve gained 20 extra pounds after eating all of it,” says Franklin.
After good conversation and an even better meal, Franklin and Morrow got back in the car to head back to Wofford. Immediately, without hesitation, they both agreed that Pappy’s deserved 5 out of 5 stars on the WoffordSpoon meter.
“I’d give it 6 out of 5 if I could,” says Morrow.
So why not wait? Pappy’s Old Fashioned Barbeque is the way to go! But if you’re feeling extra lazy and don’t want to leave your dorm, check out their website: www.pappysoldfashionedbbq.com to place your order online and to get it delivered straight to your dorm!
