Friday night fun expands as Finite gains momentum and funding
Finite is an organization on Wofford’s campus that offers students the opportunity to play sports, eat food and socialize in Phase 3 on Friday nights. The organization was started a few years ago during the 2016 Spring semester by former Wofford students such as Josh Crawford and current senior Anne Rand. The students reserved places on campus like Anna Todd and the Benjamin Johnson arena on Friday nights where they would open the doors for pizza, spikeball and basketball, all paid for out of their own pockets.
“It was difficult at first because we weren’t funded by anyone; the food and activities were mainly coming out of our own pocket. Every now and then we would have a faculty member pay for something, like pizza or donuts,” said senior, Anne Rand.
After a year or two of growth, Finite finally became funded last year by Campus Life and recognized as an official organization on campus. Finite was created as an extension of the row, another fun option for Friday nights where students are able to socialize, eat and participate in physical activity if they so wish.
“We wanted to give students the opportunity to have multiple options on campus. If people want to meet and hang out with people they normally might not have had the opportunity to, or do something active, they have Finite as an option. I started attending my freshman year of college and actually ended up meeting my current roommate. It is so great to see new faces attend each week!” said junior, Liesel Rutland.
Each week Finite has a new food option and/or theme. However, physical activities such as spikeball, basketball, beach volleyball, food and more recently, chalk for sidewalk art, are all offered. Finite is typically held in Phase 3, but when the weather does not permit, it is moved to the Benjamin Johnson arena.
Finite has had people of many backgrounds attend: Recruits for sports teams, international students, siblings of Wofford students and Converse students are all among those who have been welcomed to Finite Fridays.
“Finite is made for everybody. I don’t think its an alternative to the Greek Village, I think it’s an extension. Everyone is welcome no matter what else they’ve done that night. Come as you are. Come before, after or in the middle of your time at the row,” said senior, Grant Page.
