OG&B talks with Lovell, newly-elected Campus Union president
For Luke Lovell, ’20, newly-elected Campus Union president for the 2019-2020 term, “Why Wofford” is in the little things; “One of the things I love is to say hello to people when I’m walking by them; most people [at Wofford] don’t think it’s abnormal for me to do that,” he said.
Lovell, a Finance major from Gainesville, GA, won the spot of president during a runoff between he and incumbent candidate Fredy Madrid, ’20, in early April. Lovell says he is excited about “making Campus Union more transparent and involved with the students” and is already working diligently to do so. He emphasized how vital communication between Campus Union officers, delegates and their peers is, saying, “I want students to know that they can reach out because we’re here to make changes…the big and the small.”
According to Lovell, one of the goals he is most excited to fine-tune and implement is an alumni mentor program. This program, he explained, will involve partnering each student at Wofford with an alumni mentor in their field of study, to be assigned after the student has declared his or her major. “We’re hoping to roll out the first stage of the mentor program test group sometime in the fall of 2019,” he said.
Lovell also said he is passionate about making the Wellness Center more accessible, specifically by ensuring that the counselors are outfitted with the support they need to, in turn, provide for the emotional and mental health-related needs of the campus.
Lovell has experience in both campus-related affairs and real-world application of business knowledge. He has been involved in various business ventures from a young age; taking after his father, a real-estate agent, Lovell currently manages properties for multi-family real estate. He said he is looking forward to bringing his business background to his newly-elected role at Wofford and is “always looking for efficiencies” in the way things are run, whether they are in businesses, meetings or other affairs of the college.
In his nearly-completed three years at Wofford, Lovell has served on multiple committees, including the Campus Dining Committee, which chose the new AVI contractors when the previous food provider’s contract ended. Though AVI has made a number of changes to the dining options on campus, he noted, “The best will come after the renovations of Burwell.” He has also served on the Facility Affairs and Financial Affairs committees all three years and was elected as a Campus Union delegate as a freshman. Of his involvement with CU, he said, “Every second I’ve been on campus, I’ve served as a delegate,” noting that he ran as a dual delegate for the 2018-2019 school year since he studied abroad in the fall of 2018. Lovell is also a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Lovell wants to encourage all students to feel comfortable reaching out to and communicating with him and the other Campus Union officers and delegates. He can be contacted by email, [email protected], or by phone, 770-539-4192.
