CHIPOTLE DONATES 50% OF PROCEEDS TO SHH ON NOV. 12—

Students Helping Honduras (SHH) challenges Wofford students to “cause an effect” this Thanksgiving season. All you have to do is eat dinner, which you are probably going to do regardless. The Spartanburg West Chipotle on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. will be donating 50% of the proceeds to Students Helping Honduras, if you bring in the promotional flyer, show it on your smartphone, or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause.

By helping Students Helping Honduras, you are donating to a student organization which aids the impoverished community of El Progreso, Honduras. The money raised supports the school children in this community. An overarching goa of the organization is to build 1,000 schools in Honduras. SHH has started chapters in many colleges and universities throughout the nation to help achieve this goal. SHH students help by raising awareness, hosting fundraisers and arranging trips to Honduras to help firsthand in the building process. The Wofford SHH intends to use the funds raised to travel to Honduras to help build schools.

“We have been given so many privileges as Wofford students. The students of Honduras do not have near as many educational opportunities or resources, but yet they still desire and yearn for an education. Many of the students, due to lack of funds and poverty, are forced to go to school in flooded facilities with limited books and study utensils. Through SHH, we help build a new school for these students in need through fundraising,” says President of SHH Anna Henson.

With the funds raised, SHH was able to make their first trip to Honduras in the summer of 2014, traveling with a group of eight Wofford students. During the trip they added a 3rd and a 4th grade classroom onto the Villa Hermosa Bilingual School, mixing cement, applying the cement to the foundation of the building and carrying cement blocks. They also helped lay the foundation for the new library in the village.

On the experience, Virginia McCully wrote, “What I experienced in Honduras was unreal. The children that I lived amongst have never had much. A jump rope and one page out of a coloring book made them unbelievably happy.”

By eating out at Chipotle this week and ensuring that 50% of the profits go towards SHH, Henson believes you are contributing more than just money and more than the physical structure of a building.

“You could offer them hope to continue to chase after their dreams, even as you chase after your own as a beneficiary of Wofford College,” says Henson.

Students Helping Honduras meets every other Thursday at 11 a.m., and there are currently around 20 active members. SHH has plans to go to Honduras again the first week of the summer in 2015. They have hosted a grilled cheese sale which raised about $350. To get involved or for more information, contact Anna Henson at [email protected].
