Ebet Lansing and the #SpartanburgSombrero
Ebet Lansing ‘22 has been creating art since a young age, but she recently had the opportunity to create her largest piece yet: painting three murals for Burrito Hub.
“I had never done anything this big before, but what an amazing opportunity it would be,” Lansing said.
The three murals cover the sides of Burrito Hub and feature a large sombrero that people can take pictures with, using the hashtag #SpartanburgSombrero. The second mural says “Greetings from the Burg” with a large train, and the third says “Burritos and Tacos,” with an arrow pointing towards Burrito Hub’s parking lot.
Lansing finished two of the murals before Thanksgiving break and recently completed the third in January. This project was the first time Lansing had painted a mural, about which she said, “I was learning about the process as I went.”
While painting the murals, Lansing found creative ways to do the actual painting like standing on the top of her car to reach the tall parts of the wall.
Lansing’s friend, Sarah Kate Levin ‘22, was working on social media projects with Burrito Hub when the restaurant decided that they wanted a Wofford student to paint murals on the sides of their building. Burrito Hub asked Levin if she knew anyone who would be interested, and Lansing said that Levin “came running to me with so much excitement,” telling her about the opportunity to paint the murals.
Lansing said that painting is her favorite medium of art, especially watercolor and acrylic.
“When I first started art,” she said, “I began with drawing (as most artists do, I think), but I was quickly encouraged by both of my grandpas to pursue painting. They were both artists before they passed away, and being able to talk to them about art and painting was the best way I was able to connect with the two of them.”
Lansing is a studio art and theatre double major. Her passion for art is something that she wants to continue after graduation in some way. She fell in love with art in high school, and she has recently been excited about the prospect of teaching at that level.
Lansing’s art can be found on her instagram, @ebet.art, and her recently made website www.ebetart.wordpress.com. The website serves as a virtual portfolio and makes it easy for Lansing to share her artwork with others as well as allows people to contact her for commissions.
Lansing especially enjoys creating commissioned artworks. She encourages people to reach out to her for any of their art needs, adding that, “there is nothing better than the feeling of providing a beautiful, meaningful piece of art to a recipient who I know will treasure it because it’s something they helped think up!”
Painting the murals for Burrito Hub has also brought Lansing opportunities for painting more murals in Spartanburg in the future.
“There will be another Ebet.Art mural in Spartanburg very soon!” she said. “Maybe even two… I’m so excited to see all the potential opportunities unfold.”
