Wofford College sororities and fraternities had the exciting opportunity to participate in the annual Greek Week celebration during the week of Oct. 30. Since Halloween fell on that Tuesday, the weeklong celebration was titled “Greek Halloweek.” All proceeds made during the week benefited the Boys and Girls Club of America, which has a Spartanburg chapter that provides after school programs to children.
On Monday, members of each sorority and fraternity welcomed three speakers who came to discuss the importance of mental health and mechanisms to help manage stress. One of the speakers helped to develop an app that allows individuals to tailor the information and exercises presented, and students were encouraged to sign up for the app.
On Tuesday evening “trick or treating” was offered in the Greek Village. Each sorority and fraternity decorated their house for Halloween, had games and gave away candy to children that came to the event. There were even a dunk tank and a bounce house for children (and Wofford students) to use.
After the second day of Greek Week, Kappa Alpha Theta was in first place with 448 points, Zeta Tau Alpha in second place with 420, Kappa Delta in third with 360 and Delta Delta Delta in fourth place with 356 points. These standings include attendance to the first two events and the picture opportunities, which included using the hashtag #GreekHalloweek17.
On Wednesday, Lip Sync for the sororities and the first annual Bachelor Auction for fraternities took place. This year’s theme for Lip Sync was “time warp.” Every sorority chose a multitude of songs and produced a creative and unique choreography. A popular song that happened to be in each sorority’s routine was “Year 3000” by The Jonas Brothers. Zeta Tau Alpha took first place, Kappa Alpha Theta took second, Kappa Delta took third, and Delta Delta Delta took fourth.
Afterwards bachelors of Wofford offered fun and unique dates to the highest bidder. Some dates included food, tickets to a movie and even the opportunity to be serenaded to. One date sold for over $200, and all proceeds also went to the Boys and Girls Club.
To conclude Greek Week, on Thursday there was a Cash for Car-Smash near the village, and the annual Greek Games. At Cash for Car-Smash, there was an old car ready to be beat up. For a small price, students could hit the car with hammers and other such tools. It was promoted as a great way to relax and relieve stress.
Later that evening, during Greek Games sorority and fraternity members had the opportunity to participate in three legged races, a keg roll, awheel barrow race, a tug of war tournament and other fun activities. After everything was said and done, Zeta Tau Alpha won Greek Week. However, every sorority and fraternity had an exciting Greek Week this fall and managed to raise $4,905.37 for the Boys and Girls Club.
