A new food truck, aptly named “429 (The Road Boss)” after Wofford’ street address, is set to make its debut at the beginning of March to continue AVI’s efforts to improve dining on campus.
Cherie Tyger, resident director of culinary services at Wofford, described the process of brainstorming and of creating the truck as a team effort due to the contributions of Chris Gardner, Chief Financial Officer, who initially found the truck, and also students and faculty who contributed and participated in the Office of Marketing and Communications’ contest to decide a name.
Tyger believes that The Road Boss will be a trailblazer because of its unique features that allow it to stand alone in terms of what it can produce.
“(Chris) scouted for trucks and found a unique model that has a wood burning rotisserie on board,” she said. “This special piece of equipment will allow us to create dishes that no other food truck can provide.”
The Road Boss’s menu will likely rotate and be very receptive to student input and feedback. While Tyger said that the truck will strive to “test new ideas and have some adventurous options,” she also noted the Pop-Up Kitchen from last semester as an indicator that vegetarian and vegan options were and are some of the most popular choices among students.
At the heart of the food truck venture, though, is convenience. Having a mobile dining option will allow AVI to have even more of a presence at on-campus events and athletic games. Similar to other on-campus dining locations, the truck will accept meal swipes, Terrier Bucks, cash or credit card payment.
Students can also rest assured that The Road Boss will not at all conflict with college-sponsored Food Truck Thursdays or Fridays. In fact, Tyger’s goal is not to compete or conflict with those events, but work with them for the success of both.
“Our goal with the food truck is to offer another place for students to eat using a meal swipe while making it easy to access,” she said. “We are very excited to share the food truck with everyone with our priority (being) the students on campus.”
While operating days and times for the The Road Boss are still in the air, the Wofford community can certainly look forward to trying a new form of on-campus dining when the truck rolls onto campus in early March.
