Dear Sheridan Kate,

How do I cope with campus drinking culture if I don’t drink? – Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

One of the toughest obstacles to tackle when it comes to college is the subsequent drinking culture and whether or not you desire to be a part of it. Choosing not to partake in college, whether you’re underage or just uninterested, is a completely reasonable choice to make. Additionally, it’s more common than you may think. Although it may not always feel this way on the weekends, in all actuality, a good amount of Terriers choose not to partake in alcohol.

However, with alcohol seemingly infusing most social events offered on campus during the weekends, drinking culture can feel inescapable. The key to solving this perceived alienation on your part is to find alternative activities that are just as fulfilling and ultimately will suit you better as a non-drinker.

Finite, for example, is a recently instituted social organization on campus containing members who are dedicated to providing an enjoyable Friday night experience for Wofford students that choose not to go to the Greek Village. Students gather at the volleyball courts to socialize with each other, playing sports, having bonfires, enjoying food and drinks, and listening to music. If you are attempting to avoid campus drinking culture but still want to engage in social time and make good memories, this is an excellent alternative activity.

One of the most important things to remember is that the choice to abstain from drinking in college is much more mainstream than you may initially perceive. Attending alcohol-free social events will help you to form friendships with other Terriers who share in your same goals and ideals, while fostering long-lasting bonds that will help enrich your Wofford social experience without alcohol.
