The Football Season So Far

The+Football+Season+So+Far

The Terriers are off to a strong start of the season, sitting at 3-1, 2-0 in conference. The team started the season with a 28-21 win against the Citadel Bulldogs at home, then followed this with a 59-14 home win against the VMI Keydets. They then lost 17-14 to the Wyoming Cowboys, and finally defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 45-14. First-year head coach Josh Conklin is optimistic about the team’s position, but not complacent, saying “I think our guys have done everything we wanted them to do up to this point. I also think we have a long way to go as a football team. The goal isn’t to be 2-1, or playing an FBS opponent and ‘only losing by three points.’ The goal is to be 1-0, and to win every week.”

The football squad has put up decent numbers in this time. Quarterback Joe Newman has thrown for 329 yards, 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, and has run for another 95 yards. Running back Andre Stoddard leads the Terriers with 366 yards, while Lennox McAfee adds another 329 yards. Blake Morgan leads the receivers with 14 catches for 161 yards, while Devin Watson dominates the defense with 14 solo tackles. Coach Conklin has faith in his team, and states that he feels they are on track with the season. While speaking about the Wyoming game, Coach said “What we took from that game was that we can compete with anybody in the country at our level, if we are executing and playing at a high level.” Coach Conklin also spoke on the parody in the league, as well as the confidence he has in his players from the top to the bottom of the roster.
