Trump names Bernie Sanders as Vice President Running Mate

In an unexpected move, President Donald Trump announced Monday evening via Twitter that former democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will be his running mate for the November election.
Sanders, who publicly announced his withdrawal from the race on April 8, originally cited his reasons for exiting as both the unfortunate outcome of Super Tuesday and the rising popularity of fellow nominee Joe Biden. However, in a joint statement released this morning, Sanders and Trump claimed that “This plan has been in place since early January, when it became clear the American people needed unity above all else.”
While this announcement has shocked the nation, many Americans report that they are relieved by the news. One Wofford student, who asked to remain anonymous, shared “I have always considered myself to be apolitical. I wasn’t planning on voting, and I still won’t, but it’s nice to know that they’re getting along.”
Trouble already seems to be brewing for this unlikely pair, however, as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on American society. Trump and Sanders appeared together this morning on both Fox News and CNN to read their joint statement and participate in a Q&A session. When asked about the virus’ disproportionate effects on black and brown populations in the U.S., Trump rolled his eyes and answered “That’s racist that you said that,” while Sanders attempted to cut in repeatedly.
Is this surprising combo of socialist democrat and conservative republican what America needs? Or will their incessant bickering be the downfall of both of their careers?
