A Banquet for the Birds

Wofford’s Duck’s Unlimited hosts annual banquet supporting wetlands conservation

From 6-9 pm. On Wed. Mar. 27 at the Wightman Pavilion, The Wofford College Ducks Unlimited Chapter held their annual D.U. Banquet. The Pavilion is located in between Wightman and Lesesne residence halls.

The banquet will offer all-you-can-eat barbecue, along with an open beer and wine bar for those 21 and older. Tickets can be purchased by Venmo-ing Woco-DU, from a chapter member, or from the chapter’s co-chairmen, Miles Bidwell ’19 and Carter Atchison ’20. The cost is $20 for food and drinks and $35 for the meal and a t-shirt. There will also be an auction and a raffle; the former will include limited edition K2 coolers, a variety of guns, paintings, wine racks and a DU special edition off-road moped.

Wofford’s DU chapter is overseen by the organization’s Regional Director, Tanner Quattlebaum. According to co-chairman Atchison, the chapter is eager to increase its membership in order to be more actively involved with the efforts of Ducks Unlimited’s commitment to conservation. Greater membership would also allow the chapter to host hunts and other outdoor-centric activities that would be mutually beneficial to both the chapter’s members and the environment, Atchison explained. He encourages anyone who is avid about sporting and the outdoors to contact him about joining the chapter or attending the banquet.

As stated on their website, Ducks Unlimited has established its impact in wetlands conservation as the world’s foremost leader in wetland and waterfowl conservation. The organization’s efforts are rooted in science and encompass restoration projects, landowner partnerships, land acquirement, management agreements and geographic information system implementation, among other engaging projects and partnerships.

Of the relationship between the banquet and the above efforts of DU, Atchison stated, “Without banquets like this, there wouldn’t be enough money to conserve the wetlands.” All of the proceeds from the banquet, he said, will go toward duck conservation in one of the many ways DU works toward wetlands and wildlife conservation.

Atchison encouraged anyone who cannot attend the event but are interested in membership, sponsorships or donations to contact Miles Bidwell, [email protected].
